On Yards
Shorter people find it easier on the foot rope if
they stand with a foot on either side of a stirrup.
It would be more effective still,
if our model's feet were close up to the stirrup
(but our model is actually quite tall )

Don’t forget to call out …..VERY LOUDLY
“STEPPING ON / OFF port upper topsail”
( or whatever is appropriate)
as you are about to step on the footrope (or off it),
so that………
anyone who is already standing on the footrope
will not get a big surprise when the footrope tightens or loosens with your weight.

Other important LOUD calls you’ll need to make include:-
“CLEAR ABOVE” / “CLEAR BELOW”
when climbing over the tops,
so that people climbing after you know it’s safe to follow.
* * * * * *
“ROPE BELOW”
e.g. when working with gaskets on a yard,
so that people working below you will not get a potentially nasty surprise from the gasket bomb dropping from above.

And talking of things dropping from above -
Remember to tie on hats, glasses, cameras and any tools taken aloft
And empty your pockets before you climb.
Even small, light weight items can turn into a missile if they were to drop on a person,
and it's a shame to lose them anyway.
